Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933, in Longworth, Texas, and grew up during the Great Depression in a small rural town. A gifted basketball player with professional aspirations, his athletic dreams were ended by a severe knee injury. He turned instead to poker, traveling the underground gambling circuits of the American South and Southwest with fellow road gamblers like Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts, sleeping in cars between sessions in an era when settling disputes at a poker table could mean genuine physical danger.

His path to greatness was shaped by hardship. He contracted tuberculosis and was told by doctors that he would not survive — he defied that prognosis entirely. When the World Series of Poker began to formalize the game in the early 1970s, Brunson emerged as its dominant force. He won back-to-back Main Events in 1976 and 1977, famously holding the 10♠-2♦ both times — a hand that now bears his name as "The Brunson." He would go on to win 10 WSOP bracelets across multiple decades.

In 1979, Brunson authored Super/System — widely considered the bible of poker strategy — one of the first books to share serious poker thinking publicly, influencing every generation that followed. He was the true Godfather of Poker: the man who built the game's culture, its language, and its mythology. Doyle Brunson passed away on May 14, 2023, at the age of 89, mourned by a global poker community that would not exist without him.
